Goodbye Pom Pom Rock

Portland, oil on box canvas, 50 x 50 cm

In recent winter storms, Pom Pom Rock, one of my favourite places on Portland has been washed away. It featured in a number of my pictures, including this abstract. So sad, it's been a friend.

Wycombe Court Artists Winter Show 2012, 23 - 25 Nov, Daily 11 - 5pm

Wycombe Court Artists Winter Show 23 -25 Nov 2012

I'll be showing work with Wycombe Court Artists in Buckinghamshire at the end of November. As usual, with our winter show, we will be donating 20% of takings to a couple of local charities, South Bucks Hospice and Bucks Search and Rescue. This is always a special and welcoming event, and very enjoyable for us. Hard work, though, especially for Julie and the family, who tolerate so much intrusion. All my work on wall will be new, I've especially enjoyed challenging myself to paint some very small abstract pieces exploring colour relationships.

Stourhead

New Dorset Art Group at Stourhead Gallery

I've been working on some very small (for me) paintings based on collages of photos I took this time last year at Stourhead. It was a glorious blue sky day, the trees were yellow/ pink/ gold/ red/ russet/ burnt sienna/ ochre/maroon/ umber/ with the odd punctuation mark of a strong dark green fir. I can't wait to go and see it all again. I'm exhibiting with the New Dorset Art Group in the gallery there, 12th - 19th October, hence the little pictures, hope I get them finished in time. Also in October I'm opening the studio on 21st with landscape paintings and running a course, "New from Old, Re-inventing the Image" recycling old paintings into exciting new images on 24th and 25th. So plenty to look forward to.

September's Course, "From Sketch to Image"

Working from Drawings in the Studio.

Yet again, we were really lucky with the weather, the forecast was for heavy rain but luckily it didn't arrive on the first morning so everyone was able to get out into the village to sketch. By the time it did rain, we were back in the studio, and able to work with the drawings, simplifying into blocks of tone and manipulating the colour to make really interesting and exciting images.

July's Course "Routes to Abstraction"

Abstracting in the Garden

In July the weather was so hot that everyone had to work in the shade in the garden. Six people came along to explore images in an imaginative and experimental way with some great results.

Dorset Art Week 2012

Working hard to be ready for Dorset Art Week. I think I'm probably going to display my big Dorset oil paintings and also a set of work I've done incorporating the human form in the landscape along with life drawings and paintings.

March Mixed Media course in the studio

At work in the studio.

The weather was great for the landscape in mixed media course which took place in the studio on 21st and 22nd March. Everybody was able to get outside and sketch and we were even able to eat lunches in the garden. We experimented with a variety of surfaces, adding collage for colour and texture and working with water-based paints and oil pastel. Using brushes, palette knives, bits of card, sponges to manipulate the paint. All of this resulting in a series of great and exciting images. I think everyone learned something and went away with new ideas and refreshed enthusiasm for their own work. See more images on my blog.
